The challenge

Thousands of expats and students live in the Netherlands and don't know any Dutch. Even though you can live your daily life using only English, learning the language is a crucial step for integrating into society. Learning a language can be quite difficult. One of the most challenging things is learning new words—there are just so many of them! It gets even harder when you attempt this by following a book or only studying certain words that your teacher tells you, rather than actually diving into the language and seeing how things are used in real life.

The solution

We aim to leverage recent advancements in Large Language Models along with classic Machine Learning to introduce a novel approach to building vocabulary in Dutch. Our method is based on learning through context and engagement rather than simply studying a list of words with their meanings.
