The challenge
Heat stress in nursing homes has become a growing concern in the Netherlands due to rising global temperatures. Elderly residents are particularly vulnerable to heat-related health issues such as dehydration, cardiovascular complications, and heat stroke. Additionally, caregivers face increased workload and burnout, while financial constraints prevent nursing homes from implementing effective heat management solutions. The lack of formal education on heat stress further exacerbates the problem, leaving elderly residents at risk during heatwaves.
The solution
HotStop aims to provide affordable and practical cooling solutions tailored to nursing homes. Our approach includes: Cooling Kits – Distributing low-cost cooling kits with portable cooling devices, temperature-regulating bedding, and instructional guides. Training & Awareness – Implementing workshops and easy-to-follow protocols to educate caregivers on managing heat stress effectively. Financially Feasible Solutions – Partnering with government institutions and NGOs to secure funding and develop cost-effective cooling innovations. By implementing these solutions, HotStop seeks to improve elderly residents' well-being, reduce caregiver burnout, and ensure long-term resilience against extreme heat events.
